CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

“Dada!” Marcus cried. Tiana rolled over to see Jay’s silhouette rising from the bed. She couldn’t recall when either of them had fallen asleep. They’d gone to bed a little after midnight, and she had tossed and turned until slumber won the fight.

Moments later, Jay reemerged carrying Marcus. He planted their son in the middle of the bed and lay back down. Marcus rested his cheek on Jay’s shoulder, instantly falling back to sleep. Tiana closed her eyes and tried to do the same, but Zoe’s face and large, innocent brown eyes came to mind. Her gaze focused on the ceiling. She couldn’t sleep with her daughter missing.

After easing herself out of bed, she slipped on her robe and tiptoed to the living room. She turned on the television and hit the power button on her laptop. Since it was almost one thirty in the morning, all local news broadcasts had ended. She flipped on the cable news. Zoe’s disappearance hadn’t gone national. She shut off the TV and focused on her computer.

Tiana skimmed the latest news articles about Zoe’s disappearance. Plans for the massive search for Zoe dominated the stories. She’d confirmed with Devon that they would meet up and search together. Tiana navigated to Facebook and found herself poring over Devon’s page. His latest post linked to an article about Zoe’s disappearance. He’d captioned it with the words, “Anyone with information about this should immediately go to the police.”

Scrolling through his feed, she couldn’t help but be surprised by how successful he’d become. He came across as intelligent, athletic, and hardworking. Her dad’s words when Devon had broken up with her rang in her mind: “He’s an idiot who will never amount to anything. His best chance at making anything of himself would be to join the service like his father. But he’s too cowardly to do that. Count yourself lucky. You dodged a bullet.”

Tiana had found no solace there. From the moment Tiana’s dad had met Devon, he’d hated him. When they’d told her parents about the pregnancy and their plans to marry her senior year, Tiana thought her dad would end up in jail for murdering Devon.

Breaking the news to Devon’s parents had proved equally challenging. Having raised him in a very strict military household, his devout Christian mother couldn’t understand or easily forgive the young couple’s sin, and his dad couldn’t believe his son’s irresponsibility. As an army sergeant, his dad grew adamant that Devon should enlist in the military to provide for the family he would have.

Navigating through Devon’s Facebook pictures, her breath caught in her chest. He’d posted a throwback picture of the two of them at junior prom, on their first date. She hadn’t seen it since she’d torn up all their memorabilia after he dumped her. She’d regretted it immediately after doing it, but it had been an effective way to distance herself from Devon and all the memories of their relationship.

Now all the emotions returned. Peering at the photo, Tiana couldn’t believe how happy they both looked.
